As the common name implies this species shows great variation, according to Dennis Paulson.
On the Caribbean slope the middle abdominal segments have relatively small blue markings covering no more than 50% of the segment length. S8 has significant black on the sides that extends up into the dorsal blue; it is sometimes entirely black.
